About Us

Transition Honesdale is an initiative based in Honesdale, PA a borough of 5,000 people located in the northeastern-most corner of Pennsylvania, near the Delaware River and New York State.  Formerly the hub of a dairy farming region, Honesdale, as the county seat and largest town in Wayne County, is still the “Big Town” to a rural region that has burgeoned with an influx of people from the New York City metropolitan area and others looking for a pleasant rural environment.

Our transition group is comprised of residents of the borough, its surrounding villages, rural townships and farms, drawn together by our shared concerns for the future of our local community.  We are a diverse group of people, including landscape architects, newspaper reporters, local food and sustainable agriculture activists, retired librarians, land trust coordinators, waste consultants, freelance writers, photographers, recent college graduates, and teachers.   What brings us together is our passion to create a mutually supportive, lower-energy, more sustainable future for our community in uncertain times.

In late 2009 a number of us had the opportunity to view the films “In Transition” and “The Power of Community.” We began meeting monthly in early 2010 to discuss our vision for our community’s future in light of the challenges of peak oil, climate change and economic crisis.  We’ve exchanged ideas on how to educate ourselves and others and build a supportive local community that can be more resilient and locally sustainable.  There are many ways to contribute, and we hope you can join our efforts too![lg_gallery]

    Hi Jennifer,

Great news! We hope you and your friends can make it to the next meeting on December 8th at 6 pm at the Chamber Building in Honesdale. The entrance is on the upper side of the building (opposite side from where the farmers market is). Use the door furthest to the right.
